Position Overview:

Children’s Home Society of South Dakota is seeking a Residential Program Director who oversees the daily operations and clinical aspects of the residential treatment program in a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF). This position is responsible for ensuring the quality and effectiveness of care provided to youth at CHS, maintaining compliance with relevant regulations, and leading a team of professionals in the delivery of therapeutic services. The Residential Program Director is an integral part of the CHS leadership team, providing direction and support to staff while fostering a positive and safe environment for both clients and staff. What You Will Do:

Program Management and Oversight:

  • Direct the daily operations of the residential treatment program, ensure all activities are aligned with the organization’s mission, policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and implement treatment protocols and procedures that promote best practices in the care of the youth we serve. Provides individualized, trauma-informed care for each resident.
  • Manage the program’s budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.

Staff Leadership and Supervision:

  • Lead, train, and supervise a team of residential staff. 
  • Provide ongoing training, performance evaluations, and support to ensure that staff are equipped to meet the clinical and emotional needs of the residents. Foster a collaborative, team-oriented culture focused on providing high-quality care and a safe environment for residents.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained and participate in the recruitment and hiring process for new team members. 

Clinical and Behavioral Oversight:

  • Monitor the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans for each resident, in collaboration with the treatment team. 
  • Provide guidance on clinical decision-making, therapeutic interventions, and behavioral management strategies.
  • Regularly review residents’ progress and outcomes to ensure optimal care.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Ensure that the facility is in full compliance and accreditation with all local, state, and federal regulations, including those specific to PRTF operations and standards of care.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of resident care, treatment plans, staff training, and other operational documentation.
  • Conduct regular audits of program activities to ensure ongoing quality improvement and compliance with licensing standards.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Act as a liaison between staff, administration, residents, and external stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and resolution of any issues or concerns.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, including treatment team meetings, and staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with external agencies, including schools, healthcare providers, and social services, to ensure continuity of care for residents.

Crisis Management:

  • Provide leadership and guidance during crises, including behavioral escalations, medical emergencies, and other incidents.
  • Develop and implement safety protocols to minimize the risk of harm to clients and staff.
  • Ensure that staff are trained in crisis prevention and intervention strategies (e.g., de-escalation techniques).

Requirements

  • Education: A master's degree in an accredited behavioral or social science area and at least two years of relevant alternative child care experience OR a bachelor's degree in an accredited behavioral or social science area and four years of relevant alternative child care experience.
  • Licensure: Professional licensure preferred.
  • Subordinate Relationships/Leadership: Must be able to effectively lead and support direct reports to achieve expected results and to develop positively and realistically in their career goals. Sets definitive performance expectations. Communicates Agency philosophy and vision.


Physical Demands and Work Environment: Residential environment focused on care of children with behavioral issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to physically restrain a child in ways taught by the Agency while being able to verbally communicate to the child and other staff. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
