Director of Volunteer Engagement

Salary: $100,000-$130,000

Schedule/Location:

  • Full-time
  • Location: This is a hybrid position based out of our Golden Valley, MN location with regular travel to our other locations in Minnesota. Subject to change as business needs dictate. Must live in or have easy access to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

Job Summary: The Director of Volunteer Engagement is a strategic leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, growing, and overseeing volunteer programs that support the mission and services of the organization and engage the community. This role involves collaborating with various departments to integrate volunteers into organizational activities and drive overall volunteer retention, recognition and engagement.

Essential Functions:

Strategic Planning:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive volunteer engagement strategies aligned with the organization's mission and objectives.
  • Evaluate volunteer programs and implement strategic changes as necessary to ensure programs are impactful and meet the needs of both the organization and the volunteers.
  • Develop, administer, and review policies and procedures which guide the volunteer program and reflect the values of the organization.
  • Evaluate risks associated with volunteer programs, monitor trends in incident reports, and implement strategic actions to minimize risk and increase safety.
  • Establish and implement short and long-term departmental goals and objectives.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with other departments to identify volunteer needs and integrate volunteers into organizational activities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, and businesses to promote volunteer opportunities and partnerships.
  • Regularly report on the status of the volunteer programs and their contributions to the organization to senior leadership. 

Recruitment, Retention, and Training:

  • Lead a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming volunteer acquisition strategy to identify and recruit qualified and engaged volunteers.
  • Develop initiatives to retain volunteers, including recognition and engagement, and opportunities for feedback, growth, and development.
  • Oversee training programs that equip volunteers with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their roles effectively.

Leadership:

  • Provide supervision, coaching, and development to direct reports as noted on the organizational chart, acknowledging accomplishments and providing regular feedback.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with direct reports to ensure team members have the resources and support to be successful.
  • Address and resolve any issues or conflicts within the team.
  • Review and approve timecards and requested time off within payroll deadlines, working closely with employees to resolve discrepancies.
  • Manage budgets and complete revenue/expense reports as required by Finance.

Communication and Culture:

  • Communicate in a positive and professional manner with customers, other employees, and volunteers.
  • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to make AHS a welcoming environment for all.
  • Represent the organization at community events and other public outlets to promote volunteer programs.

Technology:

  • Monitor AHS email and other messaging software.

Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

Schedule and Attendance:

  • Regular, predictable attendance, punctuality, and availability to work during operational hours.
  • Attend and participate in regular team meetings, leadership meetings, all-staff meetings, and one-on-one meetings with direct leader.
  • Must be able to travel to a different work site based on department needs
  • May be required to attend occasional off-site meetings and events.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office/desk based.
  • Adjacent animal shelter areas may be humid, noisy, or odorous.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in volunteer management and engagement.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful volunteer programs.
  • Experience in animal welfare preferred.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and process management skills.
  • Strong multi-tasking, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with computers, specifically a working knowledge of Microsoft products.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged sitting at a desk.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 10 lbs.

Emotional Demands:

  • Must be comfortable with the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of humane euthanasia.

 Transportation:

  • Reliable transportation required.
