What you need to know

• This position has the flexibility of a hybrid remote option with two days in San Antonio TTI office. This can be discussed further during the interview process.

• The salary range for position is commensurate. Final salary will be determined based on the applicant's qualifications and experience.

Job Summary

The Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s Clean Energy Program is seeking a candidate with interdisciplinary transportation expertise interested in applying their knowledge to clean energy and environmental research. The successful applicant will conduct applied research in the areas of transportation (on-road, non-road, construction, airport, rail, etc.) focusing on the intersection of energy and other utilities with the transportation infrastructure. The candidate may also support health and transportation research under the Center for Healthy and Efficient Mobility (CHEM). The successful applicant will perform research on externally funded projects, and actively seek and obtain externally funded research projects by participating in research proposal development and outreach to sponsors. The successful applicant is expected to independently lead projects and work within collaborative teams on projects led by other Principal Investigators (PIs). Continued employment in this position is contingent upon the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Essential Duties

• Design and execute applied research projects throughout the research cycle including proposal writing, literature reviews, data collection, data analysis, and reporting. (25%)

• Execute oversight and leadership of self-initiated research projects, author or co-author reports and scholarly publications based on original research. (20%)

• Prepare technical documents including formal project reports and scientific papers. (20%)

• Actively seek and obtain externally funded research projects by participating in research proposals serving as PI, or Co-PI, or contribute as a significant lead in the proposal. (20%)

• Provide oversight and direction to student employees and junior staff. (5%)

• Assist with the overall direction and management, which includes the day-to-day supervision, planning, administration, evaluation, and implementation of the program’s research functions. (5%)

• Other duties as assigned. (5%)

Required Education & Experience

• Master's Degree.

• Five (5) years of related work experience.

Preferred Education & Experience

• Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, or Transportation Engineering.

• Experience with sponsored research in the area of transportation with an emphasis on interdisciplinary work related to energy, utilities, right-of-way, and environment for state departments of transportation and federal agencies.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to independently manage research projects from inception to completion, including responsibilities such as sponsor coordination, budget tracking, and task progress tracking.

• Knowledge of principles of quality and unbiased research.

• Ability to work independently, but collaboratively on multiple projects.

• Ability to acquire, analyze and interpret data.

• Ability to serve as technical and subject matter lead on development of research proposals.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

• Ability to work strategically with oversight from a Program Manager or senior staff.

• Technical competence of transportation modeling and analysis.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Experience with on-road, non-road, construction, airport, rail, and related transportation research projects.

• Experience with transportation project development and delivery of state departments of transportation in the U.S.,

• Experience in construction inspection, 3D modeling, photogrammetry, and surveying.

• Experience in applying artificial intelligence techniques to civil engineering projects.

• Proficiency in data analytics and statistical analysis.

• Proficiency with data modeling, database design, SQL, CAD, and GIS.

• Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: R, Python, VB. NET.

• Licensed to fly small, unmanned aircraft systems under 14 CFR Part 107 for research purposes.

Required Licenses and Professional Certifications

If the incumbent has a P.E. license, will be eligible for an Associate Research Engineer position.
