PURPOSE

This position under general supervision, advises undergraduate students concerning the academic requirements for their chosen program. This position is responsible for assisting with course selection, registration process, and major selection. This position provides information on and refers students to University resources that can assist in meeting their needs or solving problems; communicates accurate and timely information and interprets institutional, core, and major requirements.

DESCRIPTION

Academic Advising: 45%

  • Provides academic advising for students grounded in tenets of practice outlined by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) and appropriate academic advising and student development theories.

  • Advises for course selection, registration, academic planning, career and educational goal-setting, appropriate resources, transitioning to the university, and retention issues. Document student advising outcomes adequately to meet department and institutional disclosure guidelines and aid in subsequent advising activities.

  • Advises in both group and individual settings with current and prospective students.

  • Perform appointment preparations including, but not limited to, reviewing all accessible academic records for accuracy and appropriateness of course work, communicating with academic departments for major-specific transfer equivalencies, and requesting the posting of approved transfer courses.

  • Process academic forms and follow-up on processed forms to ensure that the student's record accurately represents the student's chosen major, minor, concentration, and catalog year.

  • Interprets State, University, and college policies and procedures.

  • May travel to national and/or regional advising conferences; may be required to work beyond normal office hours including evening and/or on weekends.

Student Success & Retention: 35%

  • Advocate for student needs associated with their educational and academic program. Clearly communicate accurate and timely information to students and interpret institutional, general education, and major requirements per the university catalog. Exhibit strong, active listening skills. Help students develop a realistic self-perception and successful transition into the university and help them to establish realistic goals for future endeavors.

  • Monitors academic progress and implements intervention strategies for students who receive academic alerts or who need assistance in maintaining or improving their academic standing.

  • Direct students to resources, programs, and services on campus when it is appropriate to do so. Help students integrate information so that they may make well-informed academic decisions. Work to establish a partnership with students that will guide them efficiently through their academic program.

  • Monitor students advising requirements: Notify students of academic and faculty advising requirements when certain conditions have or have not been met. Maintain accurate and complete student file documentation. Prepare for and participate in on- and off-campus recruiting activities. Prepare for, present, and advise at first-year student orientations.

  • Support retention efforts include using Starfish and requiring probationary and returning suspension students to schedule an appointment and discuss university guidelines and expectations at the undergraduate levels.

Collaboration: 10%

  • Collaborates with members of the campus community in student retention initiatives.

  • Conducts research on topics within the field of academic advising and organizes activities for professional development.

Additional Duties: 10%

  • Leads workshops, seminars, and other student engagement activities across campus.

  • Attend TAMU-CC Commencement ceremonies on a rotating basis.

  • Maintain a professional and cordial liaison with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and other involved constituents concerning advisees and program. Track and obtain documents needed for potential and current students from other constituencies on campus.

  • Complies with all state, system, and university policies, regulations, rules, procedures, guidelines, and directives in a timely manner and adhere to confidentiality policies (FERPA).

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), databases, and spreadsheets.

  • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability and willingness to work as a team member and to work independently.

  • Demonstrated initiative and follow-through skills; tact, diplomacy, and judgment in dealing with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.

  • Detail-oriented and demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or on weekends.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Up to One (1) year of experience advising students in higher education.

  • Experience with Banner, Argos, Starfish, and Degree Works.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmental academic advising methodologies.

SALARY: Up to $18.79 Hourly ($39,083.20 Annual, Approximately)
