Department Overview

The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (ADUME) is responsible for providing leadership for all aspects of the UME program in the OHSU School of Medicine. The goal of the UME program is “to effectively prepare physician graduates for residency training and professional practice to best serve and meet the needs of society.” The ADUME will work collaboratively with the Dean and Senior Associate Dean for Education to develop, implement, and lead initiatives to advance the UME program in producing outstanding medical school graduates who are optimally prepared for residency training and professional, life-long practice and learning. The efforts of the ADUME will be aligned with institutional strategies and priorities. The ADUME reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Education.

Function/Duties of Position

General Areas of Responsibility and Activities for the ADUME

Lead, supervise, and direct efforts for all aspects of UME at OHSU, including:

  • Medical student admissions, recruitment, and premedical outreach and advising
  • Medical student curriculum development, course delivery, and evaluation
  • Medical student instruction and assessment, and student progress towards degree completion and competency attainment
  • Medical student affairs, comprehensive advising and support for students’ personal and professional identity formation
  • Faculty and preceptor recruitment, development, and support for medical student education
  • Evaluation of the UME program using internal and external data sources to track progress towards mission-based goals
  • Interface with leadership of MD-PhD program to ensure alignment of student experience
  • Strategic workforce development and outreach to meet physician workforce needs in Oregon
  • The UME program’s budget and resources for personnel and operations
  • Maintaining and/or exceeding compliance with specialty and regional accreditation standards
  • All programmatic and policy issues relating to UME

Specific Areas of Responsibility and Activities for the ADUME

  • UME Admissions, Recruitment, Premedical Outreach and Advising
    • a. Oversee and support initiatives to enhance enrollment and retention of medical students, working collaboratively with the Assistant Dean for UME Admissions and staff
    • b. Oversee and support initiatives to recruit a medical student body that will meet the physician workforce needs of Oregon and the nation, for the future
  • Curriculum Development, Course Delivery, and Program Evaluation
    • a. Oversee ongoing YourMD curriculum evolution to meet changing needs, including optimizing efforts that link competency-based objectives, instruction, and assessment; promote innovation, and incorporate technological advances in teaching and learning, with the goal of and promoting life-long learning that transfers across the continuum of medical education and professional practice
    • b. Oversee initiatives to optimize the YourMD curriculum delivery to students
    • c. Oversee and support the UME course and clinical experience evaluation processes, working collaboratively with the UME Curriculum Committee and all UME Curriculum Sub-Committees to identify areas for continual improvement of program outcomes
    • d. Review and analyze internal and external program outcome data in collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Education and other appropriate OHSU personnel to identify areas for program improvement and strategic planning and lead these initiatives
  • Instruction, Assessment, and Student Progress Toward Degree Completion and Competency Attainment
    • a. Oversee and support initiatives to enhance instructional quality and student learning outcomes, working collaboratively with UME course, thread, and clinical experience directors and UME staff
    • b. Oversee and support initiatives that promote teaching excellence and sharing best practices c. Support interprofessional educational initiatives across the institution
    • d. Oversee and support initiatives that promote the creation and implementation of high-quality multi-modal assessments of student performance for all courses and clinical experiences, working collaboratively with UME staff
    • e. Oversee and support initiatives to enhance the assessment of medical student performance in meeting UME educational program objectives and competencies
    • f. Provide program leadership and communication to students who are at-risk for, or have demonstrated, not meeting UME educational program objectives, competencies, and/or graduation requirements
    • g. Provide leadership during Medical Student Progress Board meetings, working collaboratively with the Medical Student Progress Board Chair and members
    • h. Work collaboratively with UME staff in preparing for, and following, Medical Student Progress Board meetings, and take responsibility for final written communication to students regarding progress in the program
    • i. Support the Provost’s Office Assessment Council and ensure required reporting for the UME program is completed
  • Student Affairs, Comprehensive Advising and Student Support
    • a. Oversee and support initiatives that promote effective transition for students to medical school, and development of personal and professional identity as physicians-in-training while in medical school
    • b. Lead, organize, and direct efforts of the Outreach, Advising, Support, and Identity formation for Students (OASIS) team and all OASIS streams (i.e., Outreach, Life & Wellness Advising, Academic Advising, Career Advising); measure, track, and analyze quality outcomes to evaluate effectiveness of medical student advising and support
    • c. Work collaboratively with the Assistant Deans for UME Student Affairs to promote trustworthiness, honesty, and professional development and behavior of medical students
  • Faculty and Preceptor Recruitment, Development, Support for Medical Student Education
    • a. Oversee and support initiatives to enhance recruitment and development of teaching faculty at OHSU and its regional education partners
    • b. Lead efforts to recruit, interview, and appoint faculty for open SoM funded part-time leadership positions in UME, to promote effective and high-quality education and to meet UME program goals
  • Budgeting
    • a. Develop and maintain authority over the UME budget, in collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Education
  • Specialty and Institutional Accreditation
    • a. Lead, organize, and direct efforts in collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Education, to maintain compliance with external standards of accrediting bodies including LCME and NWCCU regional accreditation
    • b. Work collaboratively with the Assistant Dean for UME Curriculum and the UME Program Manager for LCME Accreditation to prepare for LCME survey and site visits and related required documentation
    • c. Communicate and escalate issues and concerns regarding accreditation risks to the Senior Associate Dean for Education for awareness and collective problem-solving
  • Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
    • a. Engage in and promote innovative education scholarship, with dissemination to the educational community at large
    • b. Promote multidisciplinary, collaborative scholarship of OHSU faculty and staff
  • Represent OHSU and the SoM at local, regional, and national educational events and conferences
    • a. White Coat Ceremony for incoming students
    • b. OHSU Match Day, Commencement and SoM Graduation Hooding Ceremony
    • c. Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Annual Learn, Serve, Lead Meeting
    • d. Western Group on Educational Affairs (WGEA)
    • e. Others as determined by the Senior Associate Dean for Education
  • Develop and foster effective relationships, communication, and partnerships with members of the educational community to optimize UME program outcomes, and smooth the transition from medical school to residency

    • a. Assistant Dean for UME Admissions
    • b. Assistant Dean for UME Curriculum
    • c. Assistant Deans for UME Student Affairs (2)
    • d. Assistant Dean for Rural UME
    • e. Director of MD-MPH Dual-Degree Program
    • f. Director of UME
    • g. Senior System Application Analyst
    • h. Others as determined by the Senior Associate Dean
  • Oversee faculty and staff associated with medical student admissions, curriculum, student affairs and advising, teaching services, instruction, assessment, and the following UME committee leaders:
    • a. UME Curriculum Committee Chair
    • b. Foundations of Medicine Curriculum Sub-Committee Chair
    • c. Clinical Experience Directors Curriculum Sub-Committee Chair
    • d. Medical Student Progress Board Chair
    • e. UME Entrustment Group Chair
  • Attend a number of meetings, including, but not limited to:
    • a. SoM Dean’s Update
    • b. SoM Faculty Council
    • c. SoM Education Deans and Leaders
    • d. SoM Associate Deans and Senior Associate Dean for Education
    • e. UME Curriculum Committee
    • f. Foundations of Medicine Sub-Committee
    • g. Clinical Experience Directors Sub-Committee
    • h. Medical Student Progress Board
    • i. UME Entrustment Group
    • j. OASIS All-Team, stream leaders, and stream specific meetings

  • Support special projects at the request of the Dean and/or Senior Associate Dean for Education

Required Qualifications

  • MD, PhD, or equivalent degree
  • A sustained record of success providing leadership in undergraduate medical education
  • Evidence of innovative approaches to medical education
  • Demonstration of leadership competencies – outstanding written and verbal communication skills, utilizing systems thinking and approach, managing resources, change leadership, developing organizational talent, modeling ethical and professional behavior and personal integrity
  • Commitment to directly addressing and resovling problems in the UME program, in coordination with Senior Associate Dean and/or Dean
  • Ability to work collegially with multiple constituents, and implement change using a creative, team-oriented, and flexible approach
