Job Summary

The Deputy Director of Oversight supports the implementation of the City Council President’s legislative oversight agenda. Under the direction of the Director of Oversight, this position contributes to the planning and execution of oversight hearings and related projects through research, coordination, and process management. The role is ideal for a professional with strong analytical, research, and communication skills who is building expertise in legislative and government operations.

This role is responsible for project-based work, maintains key interdepartmental relationships, and ensures follow-through on oversight activities that help hold City government accountable to residents.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts background research, policy reviews, and analytical summaries to support oversight hearings, audits, and investigations.
  • Drafts briefing materials, hearing memos, question lines, talking points, and follow-up documentation.
  • Coordinates logistics for oversight hearings and meetings, including preparation of agendas, document packets, and schedules.
  • Tracks oversight requests, follow-up items, and outcomes using internal tracking systems.
  • Maintains organized records of communications, hearings, and other oversight activities.
  • Communicates professionally and persuasively with agency staff, Council members and staff, and other stakeholders to gather information and facilitate collaboration.
  • Supports project management of intra-divisional initiatives and performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Oversight.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Have a bachelor's degree in public administration, Business Administration, Government, Political Science, Law, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required.

A Juris Doctor (J.D.) or advanced degree is preferred but not required.

AND

Experience: Have at least two (2) years of professional-level administrative, operations, policy, or legal experience is required, preferably in a government or legislative environment.

Experience related to investigatory, oversight, or compliance work is strongly preferred.

Previous work lead or coordination experience is helpful but not required.

OR

Equivalency Notes: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Public administration principles and processes.
  • Government functions and legislative oversight practices.
  • Research methods, data interpretation, and presentation techniques.
  • Laws, rules, and procedures related to public operations.
  • Strong analytical and research skills with the ability to summarize findings clearly.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including persuasive writing.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Political acumen and discretion when working with sensitive information.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Comfort working under supervision while also independently initiating tasks and follow-up.

Background Check

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening, and must be successfully completed.

Probation

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a 6-month mandatory probation.
