Ocean Freight Procurement Coordinator
The Marine Freight Procurement Coordinator is responsible for managing and executing ocean freight procurement activities, including carrier selection, rate negotiation aligned with the strategy defined with the Director and VP. This role also serves as a key escalation point for shipment loading issues, proactively resolving challenges to ensure timely and cost-effective cargo movement. The coordinator collaborates closely with internal stakeholders and Carriers / freight forwarders to maintain efficient operations.
The Marine Freight Coordinator will be a part of the global freight team and will be based in Houston, Texas, USA reporting directly to the Director of Global Marine Freight.
Responsibilities:
- Source and negotiate competitive ocean freight rates with carriers and NVOCCs.
- Review and understand ocean freight contracts (boiler plate) including legal and commercial terms.
- Monitor carrier performance, rate validity, and contract compliance.
- Coordinate and validate carrier allocations, space planning, and routing decisions.
- Maintain rate databases and ensure accuracy of procurement records in internal systems.
- Act as the main escalation point for loading or operational shipment issues (e.g., rollovers, space rejections, port congestion).
- Investigate root causes of shipment disruptions and propose corrective actions.
- Monitor market trends and provide insights to inform procurement strategies.
- Analyze freight spend and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Perform other duties related to the position as assigned by the Director of Global Freight.
- Fluency in English. A second language is a plus.
- Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced and deadline-driven office environment
- Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building abilities.
- Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Able to work independently and collaborate across cross-functional teams.
- Proactive and solutions-oriented, with a continuous improvement mindset.
- 5+ years of experience in International Maritime transportation (Carrier or Freight forwarder)
- Advanced knowledge of Excel & MS Office tools
