What we want
The Research Assistant plans and performs experiments related to research projects in the laboratory, provides administrative assistance with ordering supplies and maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies (for example, IACUC and IBC), and supervises undergraduate trainees in the laboratory. Participates in the outreach project for high school student in the Texas Rio Grande Valley, organizing high school student activities, obtaining consent and administering surveys to the participants, and administrative assistance with ordering supplies for the project and maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies (IRB).

Qualifications
Required Education:
Bachelor of Science or Arts degree in a biological science (e.g. Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering)
Required Licenses and Certifications:
Class C Texas driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Ability to positively and professionally interact with faculty, staff, trainees, and groups of various sizes.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Working knowledge of office software and instructional programs.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Ability to perform experiments with rodents that include anesthesia and injections.
Ability to perform immunohistochemistry.
Ability to perform fluorescence microscopy.
Ability to perform flow cytometry experiments.
Ability to design, plan, coordinate and execute experiments using standard techniques of routine research in support of various projects in the lab including, but not limited to cell culture, microscopy, and rodent husbandry.
Ability and willingness to learn and apply new techniques specific to this lab and apply them to conduct experiments.
Ability to use standard computer programs to perform data analysis including statistical analysis and technical evaluation of research results.
Ability to evaluate and summarize results for written and oral presentation.
Ability to assist in the preparation of proposals to funding agencies.
Ability to order lab supplies, pay invoices, maintain financial accounts, and maintain regulatory compliance with the IBC, IACUC, and IRB.
Ability to supervise or assist high school, undergraduate and graduate students, and other laboratory, technical, or field staff, involved in research.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
2 years of research experience in a biology or equivalent laboratory.
2 years of experience with STEM outreach and education.
Experience with animal models and handing.
Experience with laboratory management and compliance.
Experience with student supervision.
Responsibilities
Experimental Duties:
Laboratory
Assists in the design, planning, coordination, and execution of experiments using standard techniques of routine research in support of various projects in the laboratory.
Uses standard computer programs to perform data analysis including statistical analysis and technical evaluation of research results.
Evaluates and summarizes results for written and oral presentation.
Assists in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
Outreach
Assists in the design, planning, coordination, and delivery of curriculum elements for the Texas Research Experience (TREX) high school outreach program that provides authentic citizen science, field, and laboratory experiences for high school teachers and students.
Assists in obtaining consent from participants and implementing the program surveys.
Evaluates and summarizes survey results for written and oral presentation.
Administrative Duties:
Laboratory
Assists in the preparation of proposals and reports to funding agencies.
Assists in ordering supplies and maintaining inventories of bacterial strains and cell lines.
Monitors and manages the various accounts from which supplies are ordered.
Maintains compliance with regulatory agencies including the IACUC and IBC, Assist with IBC and IACUC amendments. Participate in vivarium and laboratory inspections.
Outreach
Assists in the preparation of proposals and reports to funding agencies.
Assists in organizing high school student activities both the Texas Rio Grande Valley and in Bryan/College Station.
Assists in transporting participants for field experiences.
Maintains compliance with regulatory agencies including the IRB and University Youth Programs (UYP). Assists with IRB amendments.
Supervision Duties:
Laboratory
Supervises or assists undergraduate and graduate students and other laboratory staff involved in research.
Ensures that laboratory personnel are adequately trained.
Outreach
Supervises or assists outreach staff, high school teachers and students involved in the TREX program.
Ensures that participating faculty, staff, and students are adequately trained (background checks, safety for minors).
