Geospatial Scientist, Data Collection and Quality

We are seeking an experienced Geospatial Scientist specializing in data collection and quality management to lead efforts in geospatial data acquisition, quality assurance, and stakeholder engagement.

Skills

  • Expertise in geospatial sciences, cartography, GIS, and data management.
  • Strong skills in vendor management and contract negotiation for data acquisition.
  • Experience developing and applying QA/QC procedures for geospatial datasets.
  • Proficiency in scripting, automation, and geospatial data processing tools.
  • Knowledge of geospatial data standards, metadata management, and federal policies.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and presentation capabilities.
  • Track record of managing large-scale, multi-stakeholder data projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine methodologies for geospatial data collection and maintenance aligned with mission requirements.
  • Manage data intake, prioritize data needs, and ensure rigorous quality control throughout acquisition and delivery.
  • Maintain and update SOPs for data acquisition, QA/QC, and data publishing processes.
  • Oversee budget management dedicated to securing high-value geospatial data products.
  • Define and enforce data requirements including accuracy, coverage, resolution, licensing, and compatibility.
  • Maintain comprehensive provider and dataset lists, and engage with high-quality geospatial data providers.
  • Negotiate licensing agreements and procurement contracts ensuring compliance and best value.
  • Lead technical presentations and demonstrations for stakeholders and mission partners.
  • Support integration of geospatial data products into government systems and coordinate program activities.
  • Lead QA/QC efforts applying standardized checklists and validation techniques to ensure data integrity.
  • Manage feedback loops to improve content and resolve data quality issues.
  • Develop and maintain geospatial metadata for downstream usability.
  • Automate data processing workflows with proper documentation.
  • Oversee geospatial data registration, cataloging, and federation within government platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards (FGDC, ISO) and geospatial data best practices.
  • Monitor performance metrics and user feedback to improve acquisition and management processes.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Geospatial Science, Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or related field.
