Access Coordinator

Overview

The Access Coordinator is responsible for facilitating access to courses, programs, services, and activities for students with disabilities. The Coordinator works directly with students in the interactive process to understand their experience of disability and the disability related barriers they face. Applying independent judgment and expertise, the Access Coordinator identifies reasonable accommodations to minimize the disability-related barriers, addresses individual student issues with faculty and other campus personnel, and follows-up and reviews existing accommodations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular, co-curricular, and housing environments and determine appropriate accommodations through the “interactive process.”
  • Completes the student services process including collecting, reviewing, documenting and maintaining student information, and documenting communications regarding students using the disability management system, Accommodate.
  • Collaborates with the Accommodations Coordinator to implement assistive technology or other accommodations and resolve issues for students with sensory, physical and temporary disabilities.
  • Consults with faculty to understand essential components of courses and academic programs to determine reasonable accommodations or appropriate implementation of accommodations for students.
  • Works with the Housing Office, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students (ODUS) and the Graduate School staff to support the implementation of housing accommodations determined to be reasonable within each residential college or the Graduate School.
  • Collaborates with campus partners such as Residential College deans and staff, Graduate School deans and staff, and internal medical and mental health professionals to support students with disabilities.
  • Assist faculty and students to understand parameters of approved accommodations within the scope of each individual course.
  •  Supporting Office administrator with hiring resource assistants
  •  Support accessibility and disability awareness by serving with other office staff to address accessibility at Commencement events and other large campus events and to participate in programming for the AccessAbility Center.
  • Support ODS office as needed, including back up for answering phones, responding to general emails and other office-related tasks.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Required

  •  Master’s Degree in a human service-related field with 3 or more years’ experience in a similar capacity or Bachelor’s degree in a human service-related field with 5 or more years of experience in a similar capacity.
  •  Demonstrated experience reviewing clinical documentation, conducting interactive/iterative processes for determining accommodations and providing such accommodations.
  •  Ability to manage multiple, on-going and complex caseload of disability-related student matters.
  •  Strong verbal and written interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, organization, time management and electronic skills.
  •  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a range of constituencies including faculty and administrators.
  •  Ability to relate to individuals of diverse abilities and backgrounds.
  •  Excellent judgment, personal maturity, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to remain a neutral party.
  •  Strong time management, organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize, and manage competing priorities.
  •  Strong commitment to confidentiality and professionalism.
  •  Knowledge and understanding of the application of federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students.
  •  Knowledge of models of disability and inclusive educational design and their application in higher education.
  •  Skill at developing and delivering professional presentations and workshops

Preferred

  •  Minimum three years' experience working in a higher education disability service position.
  •  Work experience in and knowledge of the learning context of highly competitive postsecondary institutions.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Windows 10, Apple operating systems, Google docs, Microsoft Exchange and Outlook and understanding of programs such as Accommodate and PeopleSoft.
