Youth and Family Engagement Manager

Description

The Youth and Family Engagement Manager is responsible for the creation, execution, and evaluation of dynamic, mission-driven educational programs and events for youth and family audiences both on-site at the Museum, off-site in the Greater New Orleans area, and virtually for national reach. This position plays a pivotal role in planning and delivering high-quality, engaging experiences for children and families ranging from intimate hands-on activities to large-scale public events. The ideal candidate brings demonstrated expertise in event planning, educational program development, and community engagement, particularly for intergenerational audiences.

As part of the Public Engagement team and larger Education and Access division, this role collaborates across departments to design and implement inclusive, accessible, and age-appropriate programs that support the Museum’s educational mission and highlight both permanent collections and special exhibitions. Programs include—but are not limited to—intergenerational and accessible family days, scouting events, camps, virtual learning series, and signature annual events such as the Family Block Party.

Requirements

  • Plan, execute, and evaluate a variety of youth and family focused events and programs, both large and small in scale, that are aligned with the Museum’s educational goals and interpretive themes. Events include annual large-scale public events (e.g., Family Block Party), mid-sized activities (e.g., Scout Week), and smaller, hands-on programs.
  • Lead the design, management, and execution of camp programming, including developing curriculum, hiring and managing seasonal staff, coordinating logistics, communication with parents, and ensuring high-quality experiences for all participants.
  • Develop innovative, engaging programming in partnership with community organizations, local schools, and national partners to expand reach and relevance for diverse family and youth audiences.
  • Work collaboratively with departments across the Museum—including Operations, Curatorial Services, Visitor Services, and more—to ensure the successful execution of all programs and events, with particular attention to logistics, accessibility, and visitor experience.
  • Represent the Education Department at community and outreach events, serving as a lead ambassador for youth and family engagement initiatives.
  • Support the development of exhibition-related educational content, advocating for youth and family perspectives in interpretation, design, and public programming.
  • Assist with other public programs as needed, including those focused on veterans, military history, and general audiences.
  • Contribute to broader educational initiatives to ensure youth and family inclusion across all programs, resources, and outreach strategies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education, museum studies, public history, child development, or related field preferred. Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in a museum, cultural institution, or educational nonprofit with a focus on event planning and program development for youth and families.
  • Proven ability to lead the planning and coordination of both small- and large-scale events, from concept to implementation and evaluation for diverse audiences.
  • Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills; able to juggle multiple projects, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, and meet deadlines.
  • Deep understanding of best practices in youth and family engagement, informal learning, and intergenerational programming.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff or interns, managing program budgets, and collaborating with multiple departments.
  • Ability to design educational experiences grounded in learning theory, practices that honor diversity and foster belonging, and community engagement best practices.
  • Experience in virtual program delivery using platforms such as Zoom, Vimeo, etc.
  • Creative, self-motivated team player with a passion for inclusive educational outreach and the ability to work independently.
  • Comfortable engaging learners of all ages and abilities in both structured and informal settings.
  • Availability to work evenings and some weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to travel regionally in support of outreach and engagement efforts.
