We are seeking a Project Engineer to join our team supporting the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) at their Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory! This position is full-time and will be based out of West Mifflin, PA with hybrid flexibility.
Responsibilities
Work with a team of engineers supporting repair technology development efforts by leading test programs both within a laboratory setting and via commercial subcontracts.
Develop and expand technical skills through complex assignments involving established as well as novel technologies, and interpersonal skills through numerous interfaces across the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, our shipyards, and Naval Reactors Headquarters in Washington, DC.
Develop, test, evaluate, and eventually qualify repair procedures in the laboratory and consult with various fabrication vendors and shipyards; repair operations which may be supported include: gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding, epoxies/composites, and mechanical/machining processes.
Develop and interpret specifications, drawings, and engineering standards.
Plan and execute work programs, design experiments, analyze experimental results, and prepare technical reports.
Plan, follow, and execute work efforts.
Conceive and produce technical instructions and procedures.
Track procurement actions / budget performance.
Write technical submittals and recommendations.
Contribute to the development of novel repair techniques by drafting, placing, following and reporting subcontracted repair method development/demonstration contracts.
Occasionally travel to vendors and shipyards to support project planning, equipment testing and repair deployment.
Team with other engineers to identify, research, test, and evaluate metallic and non-metallic repair technologies, leveraging existing welding, machining, and other industrial processes.
Support some Project Management aspects of the position.
Provide project planning, assignment of work, coordination of resources, and reporting of project performance within NNL's broader repair technology development community.
Requirements
Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university and 10+ years of relevant experience.
Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed. Having a current or recently inactive "L" clearance or higher is preferred.
Must have experience making technical presentations and have the ability lead/execute laboratory operations in a productive, timely, and compliant manner.
Must have experience with engineering repair procedures and operations.
Must have experience developing and interpreting engineering designs.
Desired Skills
Experience with automated/mechanized gas tungsten arc welding.
Demonstrated acumen in executing laboratory work.
Familiarity with inspection methods.
Excellent individual initiative and creativity.
