About the Hospital Donation Support Coordinator
The Hospital Donation Support Coordinator is passionate about organ donation and dedicated to achieving the primary objectives of maximizing organs, providing the utmost care and support to potential donor families, and creating value for the potential donor families, health care professional staff within the institution and the larger community.
Responsible for supporting daily operations surrounding organ, donation at hospitals within Metropolitan Phoenix and beyond as needed. This position works collaboratively with the medical, nursing, and other departments as necessary in coordinating and educating on the donation process.
Organ Donation Activity support
Functions as an expert resource within hospitals on all aspects of organ donation.
Provides donation related education, training and support for health care professionals involved in the donation process to help them better understand the importance of donation, both for its intrinsic value and as an extension of patient care.
Creates a positive environment and provides proactive support throughout hospitals, to include the integration of identified best practices for organ donation.
Ensure team huddles occur as a part of every potential organ donation prior to approaching the family, after speaking with family and before the OR.
Family Support Services
Ensures donation conversations are facilitated in a manner that respects the potential donor, reflects consideration of the most appropriate timing and context for the discussion, demonstrates sensitivity to relevant cultural, religious or other beliefs and values, conveys an understanding of interpersonal dynamics among those involved in the decision, and addresses all elements required to deem a decision informed.
Collaborate with the health care team to assist families in locating available assistance for personal, social, spiritual, and other needs, regardless of their decision about donation.
Initiates interactions with families, when appropriate, early in the process, beginning with the referral of the patient as a potential organ donor, if designated staff are unavailable.
Case Management
Responds appropriately to potential organ donor referrals.
Collaborate with the health care team to address matters that arise during the donation process.
Completes proper documentation during the donation process. Provides hospital staff with follow-up correspondence if needed
Professional Development
Maintains awareness of current health care literature concerning organ and tissue donation.
Pursues continued professional development through formal educational programs and mentoring opportunities.
Requirements
Minimum Education/Experience:
Must have direct hospital experience, including familiarity with hospital protocols and patient care standards.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience equal to one year of experience working for an Organ Procurement Organization.
Strong ability to build trust, influence decisions, and inspire others across all levels of the organization.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Experience: At least two years’ organ procurement experience
