Overview
The Public Information Officer provides information and facilitates communication among city departments, the media, and community organizations to promote public understanding of city objectives, programs, functions, and objectives.
Essential Functions
1 Plans, facilitates, and supports communications including electronic and print media between the city and outside organizations.
2 Prepares, creates, and delivers press releases and media advisories; talks, engages, and communicates with media representatives to address questions and provide information.
3 Organizes and facilitates media events, press conferences and related special events; provides story ideas to media, staff writers, and reporters; provides support and information as needed.
4 Responds to queries from the media with information; operates, uses, and employs camera to take photographs of media events, and persons in the news.
5 Places and submits advertisements of public meetings with appropriate organizations; prepares speeches, talking points, and other informational material as assigned
6 Develops and updates website to inform members of the public of relevant news, announcements, meetings, agendas, and related information.
7 Informs, educates, facilitates and mitigates construction related issues with community stakeholders, including businesses, residents, churches, schools, hospitals, other governmental entities, community organizations, and environmental groups.
8 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's Degree in public administration, journalism, or other related field.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience working in media, public relations, or other related work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1 Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of public relations and journalism.
2 Knowledge of City departments, activities, and initiatives.
3 Knowledge of customer service and outreach activities.
4 Ability to employ excellent language and grammar skills.
5 Ability to speak in public and make presentations to a wide variety of groups.
6 Ability to coordinate with others.
7 Ability to operate camera and other equipment.
8 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
9 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
