The Opportunity

The College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University seeks a part time dedicated and detail-driven Editorial Coordinator to support the production and strategic development of CriticalProductive Journal—a cutting-edge, peer-reviewed academic journal that explores design, cultural theory, architecture, and community engagement through essays, visual art, and multimedia.

This is an opportunity to join a global intellectual community and work closely with thought leaders, artists, designers, and scholars to advance a mission-centered publication committed to cultural relevance, intellectual depth, and visual excellence.

Work hours should average 25 hours per week based on Eastern Standard time availability.

The College of Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University (Cornell AAP) includes the departments of Architecture, Art, City and Regional Planning, the Paul Rubacha Department of Real Estate, jointly led by AAP and the SC Johnson College of Business, the multicollege Department of Design Tech, and the Cornell Mui Ho Center for Cities. About CriticalProductive Journal

CriticalProductive Journal is an independent, peer-reviewed academic journal distributed globally by The MIT Press, publishing three issues annually in both print and digital formats. Founded and led by Editor Milton S. F. Curry, the Journal publishes pioneering work across architecture, landscape, urbanism, cultural theory, art, and activism. The Journal is guided by an Editorial Collective of over a dozen distinguished contributors from academia and the creative arts. More about the Journal: https://direct.mit.edu/cpro

Position Summary

As Editorial Coordinator, you will play a pivotal role in guiding the Journal’s editorial and production workflow from concept to publication. Working directly with the Faculty Editor, Editorial Collective, contributors, and external partners, you’ll manage the editorial review and revision process, coordinate issue development, support digital and print production, and liaise with MIT Press and other vendors.

This position requires impeccable organizational skills, high editorial standards, and the ability to engage effectively with a diverse and dynamic group of stakeholders. You will be the linchpin of a publication process that involves academics, artists, designers, editors, reviewers, publishers, and the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Editorial Management - Acquire and develop 18–25 essays, reviews, and conversations annually. Support theme development for each issue. Coordinate peer review and revision processes in close collaboration with the Editorial Collective and Faculty Editor. Prepare editorial meeting agendas and summaries.
  • Contributor & Rights Coordination - Manage correspondence with contributors. Facilitate peer review feedback and revisions. Draft author agreements and review permissions for text and visual materials. Maintain accurate records of contracts and rights.
  • Stakeholder & Publication Coordination - Schedule and facilitate meetings with editorial staff, designers, and partners. Coordinate journal production with MIT Press, graphic designers, and external sponsors. Oversee Journal website and social media content with specialists. Plan and execute launch and marketing events.
  • Professional Development & Support - Participate in projects and compliance training. Pursue professional development opportunities aligned with Cornell’s mission and values.

What We Need

  • A resume and cover letter submitted with your applicatin
  • Associate’s degree and 4+ years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination).
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with ability to navigate academic and creative voices alike.
  • Proven capacity to manage complex workflows with multiple contributors, deadlines, and shifting priorities.
  • Detail-oriented, with an eye for editorial precision and aesthetic presentation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat).
  • Demonstrated experience working across differences and upholding values of equity, inclusion, and belonging.

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it’s ok if you don’t.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., architecture, cultural studies, art theory, design).
  • Familiarity with graphic design, data visualization, or digital publishing tools.
  • Experience with digital marketing tools (e.g., MailChimp), surveys (e.g., Qualtrics), or journal management systems.
  • Prior experience in publishing, higher education, or non-profit arts administration is a plus.

Rewards and Benefits

  • This position is based in Ithaca, New York, however, the successful applicant may perform this role remotely anywhere within the United States. Employees who work remotely may receive multiple W-2 Forms depending on their work location.

The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholding for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside of New York State.
