Optical Metrology Engineer / Instrumentation Engineer
The size of the solar-generation market has grown 15X in the last decade and shows no signs of slowing down. The global solar power market is now >$200B/year and accounts for 50% of new electricity-generating capacity additions in the USA. Solar-generated electricity is now cheaper than that generated by coal or oil. Caelux is spurring this rapid growth by developing and deploying a novel technology that dramatically increases the power and efficiency of solar modules, at a lower cost per watt.
Our Process Development team is seeking a Metrology and Instrumentation Engineer to join us in our mission to develop new Perovskite solar technologies that drive down the cost of green electricity.
Job Functions
This is a key role essential for the success of Caelux in developing its first-of-a-kind Active Glass product. In this role, you will drive all phases of development and deployment of a diverse set of characterization equipment, including full-size solar panel 1-sun I-V tester, large-area optical inspection, thin-film sheet resistance and thickness measurement, transmittance measurement, and luminescence. You will be responsible for setting requirements and releasing RFQ’s, selecting vendors, supporting detailed design, installation, and site acceptance testing of new equipment. You will develop methods, recipes and procedures for testing Caelux’s perovskite solar panels, perform gauge repeatability and reproducibility studies, and write documents essential for handoff to our production team such as standard operating procedures, standard preventative maintenance procedures, calibration requirements and procedures, etc. You will also offer continuing support to Operations for equipment troubleshooting and corrective maintenance.
Knowledge and skills that will serve the ideal candidate well in this role are:
· Strong knowledge of optical and I-V electrical characterization methods for solar cells, ability to analyze spectral data
· Skills and experience with optical diagnostics such as electro- or photoluminescence, or similar methods
· Ability to write image processing code for data analysis
· Able to quickly learn the physical principles and operation of thin-film characterization tools such as four-point-probe, spectrometer, profilometers
· Experience and skill with troubleshooting equipment electrical control systems using multi-meter/ current clamp, and other diagnostic tools. Ability to design and custom fabricate PCB-based custom electronics is a plus.
· Curious to expand knowledge into machine-learning and artificial intelligence for data processing.
· Knowledge of good laboratory practice (safety, documentation, calibration)
Minimum Requirements
· Master’s degree or PhD in electrical engineering, optical engineering, physics or other engineering field
· 3+ years’ experience characterizing optical devices
· Good understanding of optics and optical materials diagnostic methods
· Knowledge of electronic instrumentation methods and hardware
· Ability to write image-processing code
· Good understanding of electrical systems and basic electronics
· Understands safe control of hazardous energies (electrical, pressure, etc) via LOTO and other safe practices.
· Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs
· Must be able to work at bench-height lab equipment and climb short stepladders.
· Good team communication skills, and attention to detail in planning.
