Cardiac Device Techician - Cardiology

Responsible for the technical management of all implantable cardiac devices, (currently ICD’s Pacemakers and Loop Recorders), under the direction of supervising Electrophysiologists or Cardiologists.  Demonstrates proficiency in remote/in-office interrogations, recognition of basic through advanced device/lead malfunctions, and programming devices as per protocol or specific physician order.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology as it pertains to electrophysiology and patient care.
  • Demonstrates advanced and in- depth knowledge/understanding of device technology including the operation and specifications of existing and new devices and programmers from each manufacturer and management of recalls/alerts of devices and leads.
  • Documents the purpose of the device implant and understands the expected alteration in clinical condition and potential device related causes for patient symptoms.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in remote/in-office interrogations, recognition of basic through advanced device/lead malfunctions, and programming devices as per protocol or specific physician order.
  • Ability to independently analyze device function including review of device parameters, testing of sensing/capture thresholds for each lead, assessing lead integrity and battery status.
  • Evaluation/interpretation of recorded diagnostic data including reprogramming if needed. Demonstrates understanding of the interaction between programming changes and the potential clinical outcome.
  • Evaluation of stored and real time intracardiac electrograms and identification of dysrhythmias, capture/sensing anomalies, and identification of appropriate or inappropriate device intervention of dysrhythmias.
  • Performance of post-implant device evaluation including patient education, staple/suture removal, instruction for wound care and restrictions.
  • Performance of transtelephonic pacemaker analysis including report preparation, billing, and scheduling.
  • Serving as patient advocate ensuring that all abnormal or unexpected findings are expeditiously reviewed by an Electrophysiologist, Cardiologist, EP PA, or NP.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential records. Documents all procedures, evaluations, treatments, outcomes, education and referrals.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for maintaining the device database (Paceart) with current, accurate information to facilitate information retrieval as needed for remote monitoring set-up, queries from other services, and management of device related recall events.
  • Schedules patients for follow-up appointments including transtelephonic monitoring, remote monitoring, and in-office interrogations (IDX, Paceart and Manufacturer’s sites) according to Medicare/Device Clinic guidelines.
  • Evaluation and preparation of reports for interrogations completed at hospitals or extended care facilities including physician notification of abnormal findings.
  • Maintenance of equipment and supplies associated with the device clinic.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.
  • Complies with the Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards for Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
  • Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
  • Complies with the network and departmental policy regarding attendance and dress code.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting up to 7 hours per day, 2-3 hours consecutively, when doing transtelephonic monitoring and/or remote transmissions. Walking and/or standing up to 7 hours per day. Standing in 15 minute increments, walking up to 2 hour increments. Frequent use of hands/fingers to operate equipment, apply electrodes and date entry on keyboard. Frequent use of upper extremities to reposition patients, transport patients and lift supplies up to 20 pounds. Frequent bending, climbing, stooping, twisting, reaching overhead for filing. Pushing of device programmers (approx. 50 lbs.). Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, far vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and visual monotony when scanning.

EDUCATION:

High School Graduate.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduate of an accredited/approved cardiovascular program, hospital based cardiovascular education program, or graduate of a medical assistant program preferred. Demonstrates knowledge of advanced cardiac dysrhythmias. At least one year experience and/or training in a Dysrhythmia Lab under the supervision of a competent Dysrhythmia Technician. Successfully pass the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) within 2 years.
