The John Glenn College of Public Affairs is a leading public affairs college that conducts rigorous academic research and translates and applies that research for public, nonprofit, and private partners. Public safety is a growing area of expertise within the college with multiple faculty and students involved in criminal justice research projects, and an array of technical assistance and training partnerships with criminal justice organizations.

The Public Safety Research Analyst will collaborate with a public safety research team that includes a Senior Research Scientist, Research Scientist, Public Safety Research Administrator, and Glenn College faculty, students, and staff members to carry out the team’s research priorities. The Data Science Specialist provides skills in data science, data management, statistics, and criminal justice administration. Under the supervision of senior researchers, the core responsibilities of the Data Science Specialist are data management, quality assurance, and standardization; data analysis and visualization; and data documentation. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in utilizing various data sources to contribute valuable insights to public safety research projects.

Duties Description

Data Management

• Programs data extract and import commands in statistical and computer programs.
• Creates datasets from raw data for use by public safety research team.

• Accurately identifies, extracts, formats, and combines relevant data elements.
• Cleans complex datasets, identifies and addresses missing or inconsistent data.
• Create anonymized data sets through the assignment of unique identifiers
• Standardizes data formats and ensures data accuracy and consistency.
• Manages geospatial data, including Shapefile editing and geocoding
• Creates automated reporting processes for large volume tasks
• Complies with data transfer, storage, and security requirements, data share agreements, and Institutional Review Board protocols

Data Analysis

• Conducts preliminary statistical analysis to understand the data and generates summary statistics.
• Conducts spatial analyses and create GIS maps to support research objectives
• Uses a variety of analytic tools to develop products for data-based policy making, such as data visualizations and dashboards.

Research Team Collaboration

• Attends project team meetings to provide data updates, report on progress, and align analytical tasks with research timelines and objectives
• Create data requests for external partners
• Communicate resource needs and potential data limitations to research/project leads
• Contribute to written deliverables by producing tables and figures of aggregate statistics

Data Documentation

• Maintain project documentation and version control for data files, analysis scripts, and GIS products to ensure team-wide consistency and accessibility
• Document data processes and metadata for data archival and future replicability.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, data science, public administration, public policy, or other relevant field. 0 years of relevant experience required.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced degree in relevant field is preferred. 2 years of relevant experience with law enforcement data management and collaborating with public safety stakeholders. Understanding of a wide range of policing and public safety issues. Knowledge of Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols and human subject protections.  

Desired Skills

• Experience with law enforcement administrative data management (e.g., arrests, use of force, calls for service, traffic stops, etc.)
• Familiarity with statistical packages for social sciences and scripting tools (Python, R), ArcGIS, SQL server, PowerBI, and Microsoft Office Suite

This is a 100% grant-funded, one-year position, renewable for up to three years based on funding and performance.

Salary range: $58,700 – $77,200. The salary for this position will be determined by internal equity, budget, and the candidate’s education and experience.
