Overview

Genesee Lake School is seeking a Library & Media Specialist to join their team in Oconomowoc!

The purpose of the Library Media Specialist is to provide service and guidance in the area of literacy, media, and innovative educational offerings.  This position will ensure that the Library Media Program aligns with the goals of the Genesee Lake School mission and vision, as well as follow and implement WI Library Media Specialist Licensure Program Content Guidelines.

GLS is both a therapeutic day school & residential treatment center for children and young adults with Autism and neurological, emotional and/or developmental disabilities. We have received the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) award for three consecutive years. Our 160-acre campus in the countryside near Oconomowoc provides an ideal setting for our students to learn, develop and achieve their potential. The school calendar follows the typical 180 educational days with the opportunity to attend Extended School Year for students in need of this programming.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Maintain a Library Media Center that provides a teaching and student-centered learning environment.

  • Evaluate and promote awareness of emerging technologies through research and conference attendance. 
  • Assist in providing professional development opportunities in the integration of learning tools into instruction.
  • Manage the circulation and distribution of information resources and equipment using designated and approved system.
  • Promote ethical and responsible digital citizenship and the use of intellectual property through identified curriculum.
  • Serve as a resource consultant around educational technology and media resources by offering trainings, webinars, and collaboration with teachers and classroom staff.
  • Maintain the Library Media Center and introduce new initiatives around media and technology.
  • Collaboration with teachers to promote classroom involvement around literacy, technology, and media resources.
  • Collaboration with the Specials Department (Physical Education, Art, Therapy) to provide innovative educational opportunities for students.
  • Promote reading, information literacy skills, and information resource use through reading initiatives (e.g. book clubs, reading programs, special events, book fairs).
  • Research and secure innovative instructional materials, devices, and resources to teachers and classrooms for implementation of current practices.
  • Managing the annual library media budget as set by the Education Director.
  • Conducts self in positive, respectful and collaborative manner demonstrating proactive actions and decision making that foster supportive work relationships and a healthy and safe environment.  Communicates effectively verbally and in writing with internal and external customers maintaining professional conduct and confidentiality. 
  • Maintains abreast of current trends in services and other related areas; attends conferences, workshops and other training as needed and shares this new information with department.
  • Uses Agency-approved treatment techniques in supervising and educating students.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in meeting changing student needs
  • Teaches --on average--7 to 10 students at a time

WAGES & BENEFITS:

  • Hours: 8-4pm or 7:30-3:30pm during the regular school year + availability to work ESY
  • Schedule: Monday- Friday, following a traditional school calendar
  • Salary Range: $52k- $60k; Final salary based on level of education + years of experience Our teachers are paid year round/non-contract!

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Actively pursuing or willing to pursue a Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or School Library Media
  • Certified by the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction in Education
  • Demonstrated experience working with students with autism, emotional disabilities, and other diverse learning needs
  • Passion for literacy, libraries, and hands-on, student-centered learning
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Comfortable using and learning new technologies and digital tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Genesee Lake School's student population and supportive programming
  • Coursework or experience in library science, educational technology, or STEAM-related content
  • Experience using makerspace tools such as Cricut, 3D printers, and coding robots
  • Ability to design and adapt engaging STEAM and literacy-based activities for a variety of learners
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive, structured, and welcoming learning environment that promotes student growth and independence
  • Desire to grow professionally and contribute to school-wide innovation and literacy efforts
