Assistant Swimming Coach

The Assistant Swimming Coach reports to and will assist the Head Swimming Coach in directing all activities of the men’s and women’s swimming programs within NCAA, RMAC and Colorado School of Mines policies, guidelines, and procedures. The Assistant Swimming Coach is responsible for supporting the athletic and academic development of student-athletes while focusing on student-athlete welfare.

Coaching

• Assist the head coach in the preparation, coaching and training of the men’s and women’s Swimming teams; conducting all in-season and out-of-season sessions throughout the year as deemed necessary and appropriate.
• Be present during practices to support the needs of the student-athletes
• Aid the head coach in the psychological preparation of team and developing supportive and motivational approaches to practice and meets.
• Assist with underwater filming and technique instruction.
• Develop comprehensive knowledge of swimming in decision-making and in setting objectives.
• Travel to all competitions – in-state and out-of-state

Administrative

• Must be fully knowledgeable and adhere to all rules and regulations of the NCAA, RMAC (as applicable) and Colorado School of Mines as amended from time to time.
• Administrative duties such as travel logistics, compliance tasks, equipment management, and other duties as assigned
• Attend, be prepared for, and engage in all meetings
• Successfully complete all required NCAA coaches curriculum and trainings
• Proficient in SwimCloud, Meet/Team Manager and Hy-Tek Software for meet entries and meet management – will be in charge of all meet entries
• Proficient in MailChimp, Google drive, Microsoft Office application, ARMS and be willing and able to learn and use other software applications
• Strong organizational skills
• Able to take initiative on and bring creativity to administrative projects

Recruiting

• Collaborate with the head coach on annual and long-term recruiting strategies that reflect the University, Department and program values.
• Assist the head coach in the recruitment of quality student-athletes, commensurate with the admissions qualifications of Colorado School of Mines who are capable of successfully competing at the NCAA level. Maintain good relations with the parents of prospective and current student-athletes.
• Help execute well-organized and professional official visits for recruits and parents
• Timely and respectful response to all recruiting communications
• Travel to clubs and meets for recruiting

Student Affairs

• Demonstrate interest in and monitor academic progress of student-athletes and resulting overall well-being. Work closely with auxiliary staff in solving and preventing academic problems.
• Cooperate and communicate with Sports Medicine staff regarding health care and decisions of practice and participation of student-athletes.
• Support and encourage student-athlete participation in community service and other outreach activities.
• Collaborate with staff to find ways to create a safe space for student-athletes to grow authentically.

Alumni Relations, Public Relations and Development

• Strong understanding of social media best practices and the ability to produce and maintain an engaging presence through different channels, that reflects University, Department and program values
• Maintain sound alumni relations through promoting and participating in various alumni events in cooperation with the Athletic Development staff, helping with alumni newsletters and other alumni related events.
• Assist in fundraising efforts on behalf of the Swimming & Diving program and Athletic Department as requested.
• Positively represent Colorado School of Mines and the Department of Athletics, including acting and dressing appropriately in practices, meets and within the community.
• Teach and embody good sportsmanship and set a good moral example to Mines’ student-athletes.

Other

• Report issues and concerns to the Head Coach and/or Sport Administrator and faithfully and diligently carry out other Department related duties as assigned.
• Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports in the Intercollegiate and Recreational programs.
• Must be willing to work odd hours including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.
• Failure to comply with all NCAA, RMAC and Colorado School of Mines regulations and policies will be cause for termination.

Education and Experience:

• Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 2 years previous coaching experience at a high level swimming program
• Professional verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work in a dynamic fast paced environment and manage stressful situations

Certifications and Licenses:

• CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with many internal and external entities in a variety of ways. Must be able to communicate with coaches, student-athletes, athletics administration and prospective student-athletes and their families.
• This position also requires excellent relationship building skills and the ability to work well with lots of different personalities and to understand the high-academic student experience.

Education and Experience:

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated results leading and coaching a high-caliber sports program in a highly competitive, academic environment.
• Proficiency with Hy-Tek software and running meets, strongly preferred
• Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, RMAC and Colorado School of Mines preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years previous coaching experience at the Division I or II Level or Senior National Level (club). (2 year of graduate assistantship experience equals 1 year of professional experience)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to represent a public persona that aligns with Mines values.
• Ability to work with a diverse community, alumni, Boosters and Mines Foundation.
• Ability to work closely with athletic training, and staff to facilitate prevention and recovery from injury of student-athletes.

$56,485 annual salary
