Job Description:

The Medical Director of Trauma Services for the Peaks region is a region-wide position with accountability for all physicians and trauma care in the Trauma Service Line. The Medical Director is accountable for improving coordination between the clinical programs and support services as they relate to all aspects of trauma care. In tandem with operations, nursing officers and service line leaders, the Medical Director of Trauma is accountable for the success of Trauma Services at all Intermountain Hospitals in the Region. This includes clinical competency of the medical staff within ED/Trauma Services, including ICU, ED and General Surgery. This also includes promoting best practice in inter-hospital operations; intradepartmental operations; community relationships; as well as goal achievement and goal alignment with physicians. The Medical Director provides leadership oversight in developing a culture of high reliability (e.g., measurement of care by identifying opportunities, building relationships, strategic execution to drive performance, measured improvement of all physicians and advanced practice clinicians). The Medical Director is responsible for the oversight and development of the Intermountain Fundamentals of Care utilizing the Intermountain Operating Model (IOM). The Medical Director provides leadership for Mass Casualty Preparedness activities, including pandemic preparedness/response.



Scope

This is a region-wide leadership role with key organizational relationships across the Peaks region with a specific focus on leading the performance and continuous improvement of Trauma. This position reports to the Senior Medical Director of ED and Trauma in Peaks.

 

Job Essentials

  • Facilitates coordination between clinical programs and support services.
  • Works with AVP of Quality and Patient Safety to involve physicians in patient safety initiatives.
  • Stays abreast of innovative patient safety initiatives and national trends.
  • Responsible for medical staff services and quality of medical care for trauma patients at Hospitals.
  • In cooperation with the trauma medical directors, assures clinical care of trauma patients conforms to guidelines outlined by The Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies.
  • Supports implementation of clinical process models and initiatives of Intermountain Clinical Programs.
  • Supports efforts to identify and address best clinical practice opportunities across facilities and disciplines. Maintains acceptable patient satisfaction rates.
  • Regularly attends committee meetings.
  • Addresses inappropriate or unprofessional behavior.
  • Conducts annual performance reviews/conversations for physician leaders within the Trauma services structure.
  • Addresses capital needs of the system.
  • Promotes employee engagement.
  • Presents professional appearance.
  • Maintains environment of collegiality with consultants as well as in-patient caregivers.
  • Establishes professional standards for physicians within Intermountain ED/Trauma units.
  • Ensures physician alignment for Trauma operations across the Intermountain system.

Physical Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

M.D or D.O. with board certification in General Surgery. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.

Licensed to practice Medicine.

Holds active privileges at an Intermountain Hospital in the Peaks Region.

Effective leadership skills with experience working effectively and collegially with clinical and non-clinical staff to move others to action and model the vision and values of the organization.

Minimum of five years of related medical experience.

High level of competence in the field of practice.

Experience in a role requiring effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred master’s degree in business, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or another business- related field. Trained in improvement science (i.e., Six Sigma, Lean, Project management, Advanced Training Program).

Experience working in a complex health system (e.g., hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care).

Experience leading clinicians.

Certified in healthcare communication, coaching, or an equivalent experience with external entities that drive and support Experience of Care approaches and standards, including government.

 

Physical Requirements

Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.  Operate computers, telephones, office equipment, and manipulate paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.  See and read computer monitors and documents.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience. 

$7.25 - $999.99
