We are looking for a Brand Writer Generalist to join our writing team. What does that mean at Focus Lab?

About the role:

The ideal candidate is a flexible writer, strategic thinker, and avid collaborator driven to be a champion of all things written.

In the Generalist role, you will:

• Write and edit for a variety of smaller, more agile projects, focusing specifically on supporting those clients with various communication needs.
• Lead copy review at Focus Lab for both external client deliverables and internal marketing items.
• Create new brand language for our clients on larger projects and within Focus Lab’s collaborative, strategy-driven branding process.

Beyond this, you will have the opportunity to support the larger Focus Lab team with internal writing needs, including blog posts and case studies.

Because our clients’ needs and the types of projects we offer vary greatly, we’re looking for someone whose skills do, too. You should be a strong copy editor and writer and also feel comfortable interacting with clients. Simply put: You should be a flexible, dynamic writer and editor.

About you:

The ideal candidate is unafraid of having tough conversations, asking hard questions, and providing a strategic basis for making clear recommendations in the interest of a brand. You must be an active and empathic listener, a critical thinker, and hungry to collaborate within a team of writers, strategists, and designers.

You can expect to:

• Copy edit across a variety of external deliverable and internal items.
• Flex from smaller and more agile support tasks to larger projects.
• Drive and conduct weekly meetings with clients.
• Write for a large variety of client needs.
• Deliver and defend your own work.
• Work closely with both strategists and designers on a daily basis.
• Work within a fast-paced, regular weekly cadence.
• Build rapport with clients to help generate and deliver tangible, impactful ideas.
• Participate in the betterment and evolution of Focus Lab processes and client experiences.
• Work during east coast time frames.

Is writing a passion for you? Do you think of yourself as a writing jack-of-all-trades? Are you comfortable working from a style manual and voice and tone guidelines? Are you able to spot grammar, syntax, and spelling errors from a mile away? Do you bring research and strategy to every endeavor? Do you value listening? Are you comfortable with critique and opposing opinions?

We're not looking to see if you have a degree in writing or many years of experience. Many of our teammates are self-taught. We're looking to see that you are an empathic writer and strategic thinker whose love of the craft goes beyond self expression.

• A track record of successful writing, evidenced by a portfolio.
• The ability to drive a conversation and lead clients through your rationale.
• A love for all things writing and words.
• Initiative, seeing what needs to be done, and making a plan for it.
• Extremely strong communication skills.
• Equally strong copy editing skills.
