Manager, International Tax

About the Role 

The International Tax Manager will join our growing team of tax professionals located at our HQ in San Jose, CA. The International Tax Manager will be contributing to all areas of international tax, including compliance and planning. The individual will report to the Head of Tax/Sr. Tax Director. We are seeking a colleague who enjoys working collaboratively in a collegial team environment within a fast-paced growing company. The International Tax Manager will be a qualified tax professional with solid experience in worldwide tax compliance, M&A, Inter-company transactions, US international tax, Transfer Pricing and ASC 740. This role will require a person who is proactive and enjoys learning and new challenges. This role will be an active participant in planning that is closely integrated with direct and indirect tax, in order to support the business from a holistic tax perspective.   

In this position you’ll serve as a key member of our finance team and will have opportunities to contribute to shareholder value by assisting with the growth of the Company’s international expansion. For California Only - The estimated annual salary for this position is between $136,000 and $142,500 annually. Compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, certifications, and specific geographical location. What you’ll be doing 

Financial Reporting

• Support the accurate preparation of Roku foreign subsidiary income tax expense (both current and deferred) for local financial statement purposes
• Evaluate uncertain tax reporting positions in order to properly reflect the tax treatment of such items in the financial statements 

Tax Return Compliance

• Manage the accurate reporting of the Roku foreign subsidiary income tax returns including tax credits and other incentives
• Review alternative tax positions in order to determine the most appropriate cost-effective filing position  
• Support U.S. and Roku foreign subsidiary transfer pricing compliance processes, including planning, inter-company agreements, inter-company settlements and transfer pricing documentation 
• Consider technology and process improvements to improve overall compliance processes
• Support U.S. withholding tax processes including research, systems and business processes, training, and year end reporting      

Planning Activities 

• Contribute to the implementation of tax planning strategies, which maximize savings on a defensible basis
• Conduct tax research
• Actively participate in the review of proposed transactions to properly advise management of tax consequences
• Support the Federal income tax integration of business acquisitions, dispositions and restructurings

Additional functions 

• Provide support, as needed, to the quarterly income tax provision process, including foreign income tax expense as well as U.S. international tax calculations
• Provide support, as needed, to the U.S. income tax compliance process
• Provide technical tax advice and planning services to a portfolio of projects 
• Build strong working relationships with our internal project teams, developing your understanding of their unique needs and requirements 
• Develop your own knowledge, maintaining your status as a trusted advisor by monitoring emerging trends, technologies and practices 

Tax Audits and Controversies

• Evaluate and respond to requests for information from government tax authorities and participate in developing strategies to successfully defend tax filing positions
• Support the coordination and implementation of audit strategies
• Stay abreast of legal developments and industry positions in order to accurately evaluate options and responses to requests for information

We’re excited if you have 

• BS/BA in Accounting or Tax 
• CPA, MBA or an advanced degree with an emphasis in taxation 
• Minimum of 5-6 years of directly related tax experience, either Big 4 accounting firm or industry or both 
• Broad technical knowledge of US and international tax laws and regulations, including U.S. withholding tax and international transfer pricing 
• Strong accounting skills including inter-company transactions and eliminations, as well as experience with statutory local accounting 
• Solid GAAP Financial Accounting/ASC 740 knowledge 
• Excellent business acumen with a sound understanding of the tax implications of a multi-national technology company 
• Detail-oriented, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel 
• Effective presentation skills and solid project management skills 
• The ability to communicate complex tax and industry concepts to colleagues and key stakeholders through strong writing and speaking skills 
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, hands on mentality and can-do attitude 
• Bonus: experience with NetSuite, compliance processes and systems, and withholding tax software
