Position Summary
The SVP US Medical Affairs (USMA) reports to the Chief Executive Officer of Genentech. This is a key role for the Company that will be based in South San Francisco.
USMA is an independent division of Genentech with full accountability for its own strategy. The Head of USMA is a member of and actively participates in the Affiliate Pharma Executive Team (USLT and MLT), the global Medical Affairs Committee (MAC), the global Medical Compliance Committee (MCC), the US Promotional Review Committee (PRC) and the US Healthcare Compliance Committee (HCC).
The SVP USMA will lead, motivate, coach, and lead the Medical Affairs Department in Genentech to meet all Company (Roche and Genentech) scientific, ethical, regulatory, compliance, and business objectives. This person will build and lead a highly functioning and effective team to rebrand the medical role at Genentech with key customers and patients as well as external stakeholders and thought leaders. In addition, this person will direct and deploy the company's efforts, focus, and attention to the right KOLs, enhance MSL engagement, evidence generation, and close gaps by working with the clinical study sites. The SVP will expand patient reach by overcoming the barriers necessary to ensure the right patients receive the right medicines, setting up medicines for success and driving mass market entries.
This person will be expected to lead a team of 530 FTEs across all medical affairs functions, including, but not limited to, Therapeutic Area Head Medical Affairs Leads (Oncology/Hematology, Neurology/Ophthalmology/Pipeline, Immunology, and Cardiovascular Renal & Metabolism), Field Medical, Medical Operations, (including writing, information and education), and Business Strategy & Operations.
This role will contribute to medical excellence globally and ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and Good Pharmacovigilance Practices (GVP) in the North American region (Genentech and Roche Canada).

Year One Priorities
While the above represents the scope of the role on an ongoing basis, the SVP USMA is expected to make significant progress on the below areas within the first 12 months of their tenure. They are not listed in any particular order of significance.
Energize MA by building a highly effective team that functions at optimal levels
Rebrand the SVP MA role and function to emphasize customers and patients
Integrate Clinical Operations and R&D across key groups within the Medical Affairs organization
Deploy focus strategically to close gaps, understanding where to place effort and attention in areas such as evidence generation, MSL engagement, and work with the study sites
Expand to support new medicines getting to the right patients and overcoming barriers to reach patients
Set up new therapies and medicines for success
Demonstrate strong familiarity with the Roche/Genentech development pipeline and with existing therapies
Establish credibility within the USLT (and other leadership teams across Genentech/Roche), building relationships as an enterprise thinker who is "all in" and can drive change
Maintain, build, and strengthen relationships with external thought leaders and KOLs
Establish effective interaction between USMA and other Roche/Genentech functions; and with
The region and global Development and Medical Affairs functions
Location:
This position is based in South San Francisco, CA. Relocation assistance is being provided with international travel required, including customer engagements and Congresses.
Salary:
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $409,680 - $537,705. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for benefits.
Qualifications
Experiences and Technical Skills
MD strongly preferred; a graduate degree of scientific pedigree is required: Ph.D., PharmD, MPH, RN etc.
Minimum 10 years' US experience within more than one global, R&D-based Pharma company, conducting all major activities of the Medical Department, including clinical development, medical affairs, and pharmacovigilance.
Proven experience in building strategies to engage key opinion leaders (KOLs) and Advisory Board relationships
Successful track record with product launches and supporting a commercial organization.
An entrepreneurial-minded planner and builder who can identify/capture business opportunities.
Knowledge and understanding of the local medical environment and healthcare system, and US code of practice or guidelines applicable to the conduct of the Medical Affairs function
Knowledge and understanding of clinical trial management, including supported and noninterventional studies, ethical committees, and contractual processes
Familiarity with therapeutic areas that are priorities for Roche
Track record of successfully working in a complex international environment, with line management of substantial numbers of people, including managing through others and leading high-performing multi-functional study teams
Demonstrated ability of excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to collaborate cross-functionally
Experience managing substantial budgets
Track record of energizing and motivating a large organization (300+) with a clear, motivating vision of the future and of building cross-functional support and relationships to enable execution
