Accounting Manager

Description

NAYA Family Center is seeking a skilled and strategic Accounting Manager to lead core accounting operations and support the financial health of our organization. Reporting to the CFO, this role manages the accounting department's daily operations while providing direction and support to ensure compliance with GAAP and contractual requirements. This is a hands-on leadership role that blends oversight with collaboration — ideal for someone who thrives in a mission-driven environment with both structure and heart.

NAYA offers an exceptional benefits package, including free medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees (with affordable options for family members), a 401(k) retirement plan with a 6% match, paid vacation, and 14 paid holidays.

This is a full-time, exempt role with work hours of 9 am to 6 pm with a one-hour lunch. Once training and onboarding are complete, there may be flexibility to work from home 1-2 day a week.

The salary for this position starts at $81,000 a year.

Who You Are

  • You have lived or professional experience working with diverse populations, particularly within Native American communities.
  • You bring at least 5-7 years of experience in accounting, with 3+ years of supervisory experience — ideally in nonprofit or grant-funded environments.
  • You hold a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field — or have equivalent experience.
  • You have strong working knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, internal controls, and revenue recognition standards (ASC 606).
  • You are experienced in managing multi-entity accounting operations, month-end close processes, financial reporting, and audit coordination.
  • You have a collaborative leadership style and are comfortable training and mentoring accounting staff.
  • You thrive in a team-oriented workplace, are adaptable, and are willing to roll up your sleeves and pitch in, even when it’s not your job.
  • You possess strong communication skills, engaging effectively with diverse groups and adapting to varied contexts.
  • You demonstrate self-awareness, listening deeply, centering others, and taking accountability for your actions.
  • You are consistently punctual, reliable, and dependable in support of your team and clients.
  • You are proficient in computer skills, including database management, financial software, and advanced Excel functions.

What You'll Do

  • Manage comprehensive accounting records for NAYA and its related housing development entities, Sawash and Kah San, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and internal policies.
  • Supervise day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger reconciliation, accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, cash receipts, and bank reconciliation.
  • Lead the monthly and year-end close process; prepare and review financial reports and ensure accuracy of financial data.
  • Supervise semi-monthly payroll processing and review benefit and payroll reconciliations for accuracy.
  • Partner with the CFO on annual audits (financial, funder, pension) and Form 990 preparation; lead oversight of core audit schedules and tax return worksheets.
  • Manage fixed asset schedules in consultation with the Accountant and Operations Director.
  • Review and approve non-standard journal entries; analyze general ledger accounts, balance sheet and income statement schedules and reconciliations.
  • Collaborate with the Grants Accounting Manager to review financial information and make strategic recommendations to the CFO.
  • Develop and manage internal controls over accounting functions to minimize risk and ensure compliance.
  • Lead implementation of accounting policy and procedure changes after CFO review.
  • Coordinate internal audit and compliance review procedures with the CFO.
  • Staff the accounting department to meet and support organization needs; provide staff development and training for new hires and identify growth opportunities for current team members.
  • Serve as liaison between program directors and staff, providing expert guidance on accounting matters.
  • Review and finalize governmental filings and assist with annual budget evaluation and development.
  • Partner with program staff and directors to answer questions, resolve accounting issues, and ensure clarity around budget and finance processes.
  • Collaborate on the development of the annual budget and support organization-wide financial planning.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to streamline monthly close processes while maintaining quality and accuracy.
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives and help build strong financial systems to support NAYA’s growth and sustainability.
  • Stay informed of changes to accounting standards and grant regulations to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Represent NAYA professionally in community partnerships, meetings, and advocacy efforts.
