The Role

The Head of Physical Production is responsible for overseeing all physical production needs for MUBI. This role will report to the SVP and VP of Production who are based in London and Los Angeles respectively and also work closely with the Chief Content Officer, internal departments, and external producers to oversee all aspects of physical production for the studio. Over time, this person will lead a department and will assist in the staffing of projects with external resources.

The role can be based in LA, New York, or London so please specify your location, your right to work status for your current location and your expectations in your local currency in your application.

MUBI has several global operating functions and works in a variety of roles including studio, financier, distributor, and co-distributor. The Head of Physical Production will support the studio’s creative and financial goals and further build the company’s presence in the production community. This role will advise on existing systems as we build MUBI’s production capability, as well as union and guild issues, further enabling us to be the primary studio where possible on films across a range of budgets.

The ideal candidate will be a problem solver with a proven track record of running the physical production of successful independent films both domestically and internationally; have a book of existing production, production finance, legal, guild/union and vendor relationships; excellent communication skills; and will thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Comprehensive working knowledge of the independent film space, film and television industry agreements, tax incentive locations, EU co-production benefits, and guild and union regulations (WGA, DGA and SAG-AFTRA) is required, as well as a complete understanding of production process and budgets.

Where you’ll have impact:

  • Work with MUBI executives and producers to develop and/or vet budgets and production plans for projects that are in development, pre-production, and under consideration as potential investment (including schedules, cash flow, and overall approach to physical production).

  • For greenlit projects, advise on cost reporting, vendor and crew deal negotiations, tax rebate analysis, setting up production offices and entities, payroll, and any necessary guild, legal and insurance requirements.

  • Communicate daily with external production staff and MUBI execs regarding status on projects in production.

  • Ensure that productions are on-schedule and on-budget, and identify potential problem areas as early as possible. Make set visits as needed.

  • Advise on post production to ensure timely delivery to MUBI and outside partners according to all delivery specifications.

  • Establish a strong roster of vendor and staff/crew relationships for a broad range of productions.

  • Consult with project leads and Business Affairs on appropriate terms for Above the Line talent and partners.

  • Identify production facilities and advantageous shooting locales for projects in development and pre-production.

  • Work with MUBI Finance and Business Affairs to determine appropriate levels of insurance coverage and ensure that all productions are complying with these requirements.

  • Hone best practices from pre-production through delivery.

  • Other appropriately related projects/duties as assigned.

What you will bring:

  • 7+ years of experience in production executive roles, line producing, or production management across various platforms including both domestic and international film.

  • Proven experience of production team management with a major studio, television network or production company.

  • Extensive relationships within the production community and beyond is required.

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, organizational and computer skills are necessary.

  • Ability to operate with significant autonomy and discretion.

  • Ability to prioritize in a complex, fast-paced environment.

  • Strong cost reporting skills and ability to constantly estimate completion costs throughout a project.

  • Ability to effectively and efficiently create or oversee creation of budgets and schedules for feature films.

  • Ability to manage multiple, complex projects across time zones under tight deadlines.

  • Start-up experience a plus

  • Working knowledge of post-production process: hands-on post experience beneficial, but not required.

  • Experience with production management and tracking software tools and databases.

  • Experience in generating production reports and schedules.

  • Ability to be hands on as needed, “owner mentality” and accountability a must.

  • Experience with sustainable and green production best practices appreciated

If you feel you’ve got what it takes but don’t meet all the requirements we’ve listed above, we’d still love to see your application!

For US applications, the starting salary is $120,000.

We want to make cinema accessible to everyone. We believe people from different backgrounds bring different ideas that foster innovation and engagement, allowing us to attract great people to develop the best experience for our users.
