Director of Engineering

Position Overview:

The Director of  Engineering is responsible for building, delivering, and scaling custom App Dev solutions & experiences for Dutch Bros employees and customers. This critical role on the Technology leadership team will ensure technical delivery and reliability according to industry best practices. They will develop App Dev & DevOps objectives and vision to align with overall company goals and drive and scale tech innovation across the company. The position works closely with Product leaders and Principal Engineers to produce high quality, high reliable and secure solutions. They lead a team of high-performing individuals and foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The position will build and manage a team of talented engineers who can deliver quality products.

Job Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

• 10+ years of experience in Application development (including application architecture, information modelling, data governance, software engineering, and system integration).

• 6+ years of people management experience with 2+ years of managing managers

• 5+ years of experience working/managing with SaaS partners and leveraging external vendors for additional engineering resources.

Location Requirement: 

This role is located in Tempe, Arizona. This position is required to be in office 4 days per week (Mon-Thurs); Fridays are optional remote work days.

Key Result Areas (KRAs):

• Lead technical vision, strategy, and roadmap development for the Dutch Bros Engineering organization, with dotted-line support for DevOps functions.

• Ensures technical solution design is in accordance to Dutch Bros and industry best practices

• Develop and build the App Engg functions, teams, and processes to better support partner teams

• Oversee App Dev, Custom Dev Tech Product, QA, Integration execution to ensure continuous improvement of solutions supporting Dutch Bros customers and employees

• Lead the Engineering teams in designing, implementing & establishing our ability to monitor all application operations and key performance metrics/operational efficiency for the Dev team and vendor-hosted solutions

• Partner closely with the InfoSec team to ensure best practices in cybersecurity, compliance, privacy, and data governance.

• Partner with Product Management team and Project Managers to plan for and prioritize the build-out of custom dev solutions for Dutch Bros

• Lead efforts to improve cross-functional partnerships with new projects, scoping projects, technically assessing project opportunities

• Build transparency into partnerships with stakeholder teams to involve them in decision-making and seeing solutions come to life, with few or no surprises

• Identify gaps or deficiencies in the existing custom dev solutions or processes and advocate for the necessary changes to address them

• Work closely with IT Architecture, Platform Dev, InfoSec, and IT Operations teams in building out the infrastructure and tooling to enable App Dev teams with their delivery

• Partner with SaaS providers and external vendors to support App Dev solutions to develop, operate, monitor, and maintain an ecosystem supporting the needs of Dutch Bros customers, employees & stakeholder business teams

• Lead efforts to build monitoring and proactive alerts to draw focus to any performance incidents or temporary degradation 

• Drive vendors supporting business functions at Dutch Bros to align with DB technical guiding principles, standards, and best practices

• Conduct regular QBRs or audits of vendor-supported solutions to ensure alignment with DB technical standards

• Responsible for spend and quality of work from contingent development team resources, augmenting full-time employee team members

• Must be able to collaborate in-person with occasional impromptu in-person meetings

Skills:

• Experience in Python, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, XML, MVC, GIT

• Proven hands-on experience with API design, microservices architectures, cloud computing,

• Proficiency in Web Services (SOAP/REST), SOA concepts, Web Front End and Batch programming

• Expert experience in Typescript and JavaScript frameworks, etc.

• Multi-database and/or multi-language preferred

• Experience in SQL Server or other RDBMS 

• Experience with building CI/CD and DevOps solutions

• Expert level expertise in event-driven, reactive, and microservice architectures and best practices for delivering highly resilient solutions

Physical Requirements:

• In-Office Environment: Must be able to work in a busy, crowded, and loud office with frequent distractions and interruptions

  • Must be able to collaborate in-person with occasional impromptu in-person meetings 

• Office Conditions: Adaptability to typical office conditions, which may include exposure to air conditioning, heating, artificial lighting, and varying noise levels

• Mobility: Ability to sit, stand, reach, twist, stretch, and work at a desk for long stretches.  Must be able to occasionally move or lift office items up to 25 pounds

• Hearing Requirements: Hearing must be sufficient or correctable to ensure clear understanding of spoken information, including participating in virtual meetings and phone calls. Use of hearing aids or other assistive devices is acceptable if needed.

• Reading and Writing Proficiency: Ability to read and write in English is essential for processing documents, drafting reports, and following up on necessary actions. Proficiency in written communication is required to handle job-related tasks effectively.

• Vision Requirements: Vision must be adequate or correctable to perform essential job duties, such as reading documents on a computer screen and using other visual tools. Use of corrective lenses or other measures to meet visual requirements is expected if needed.

• Technology Proficiency: Must be proficient in operating a computer and other office productivity tools such as printers, scanners, and collaboration software. 

• Effective Communication: Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with team members, clients, and other stakeholders via email, video conferencing, and other in office communication tools.
