The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City clean, safe, and healthy by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets, attacking the scourge of illegal dumping, and clearing snow and ice. The Department operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms, 705 salt spreaders, and several dozen bike lane operations machines. Under the Adams Administration, the Department is aggressively cleaning more parts of the City than ever before, including over 1,000 long-ignored areas spread across every neighborhood. With the highest wintertime uniformed headcount in 20 years, DSNY is more equipped than ever to remove snow and ice from the approximately 19,000 lane-miles of City streets.
The Medical Division consists of an occupational health care facility (HCF) with a staff that monitors the medical condition of more than 8,000 employees, and five other units that coordinate closely with the HCF.
Under supervision, performs professional medical specialty work of ordinary difficulty
and responsibility, such as the following:
- Reviews medical fitness for duty of departmental employees requesting, or returning from, leaves of absence for medical reasons, or of employees reporting sick.
- Makes determinations as to employees' fitness for duty.
- Examines and evaluates the health status of employees who are injured on the job or recovering from an illness to determine their fitness for duty.
- Examines candidates for City positions, assesses whether they are medically fit to perform the duties of the relevant position.
- Documents medical evaluations appropriately in an electronic medical record.
- Refers patients to other resources (employee assistance program, human resources, EEO office, etc.) as appropriate.
- May conduct staff meetings, clinical conferences, and training programs for the staff.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, clinical conferences, and training programs.
- Works closely with other physicians, nurses, administrative, and clerical staff.
- Provides medical information and explains medical concepts to non-clinical staff.
- Performs other medical specialty assignments equivalent to the typical tasks described above.
- Performs related tasks as directed
CITY MEDICAL SPECIALIST (PART- - 53040
Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either:
a) Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or
b) Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency.
To be assigned to Assignment Level II, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I described above, one year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III, individuals must possess:
a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
b) A Master's degree in Public Health, or equivalent Master's degree, including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for this Master's degree; and
c) At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master's degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of this experience.
To be assigned to Assignment Level IV, individuals must possess:
a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
b) Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and
c) Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty; and
d) Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
